Active Magnetic Bearings (AMBs)

Radial and thrust active magnetic bearings are contactless, lubrication-free bearings.  Technology has been developed and demonstrated for the complete levitation of around 100 kg shaft spinning at 2900 rpm. The maximum speed supported by the AMB in the laboratory is around 28,000 rpm with a 10 kg rotor. The AMBs can operate in vertical/horizontal configuration, and they are capable of handling tilted conditions as well.
