HIGH VELOCITY IMPACT (HVI) TEST FACILITY

The high velocity impact test facility consists of air gun test facility. An air gun is a part of an impact test facility used to study the dynamics and damage caused by the impact of the various parts of projectile of different mass and at different velocities on aerospace structural components. This equipment is intended to be used for work on the impact test for projectiles that could be made of metal or soft bodies like gelatin etc. and is expected to be accelerated through a barrel and impact a target.

Year of Establishment
2011, Southern Electronics Bangalore
Test Applications

High velocity impact testing like: Bird strike, Ice (Hail stone), Debris, Tyres etc

Test Features
  • Projectile:4kg max, Velocity:200m/s

  • Barrel: Length 6.65m and ID 204mm

  • Actuating mechanism: Rupture disc with quick acting valve

  • Speed measurement: Laser sensors unit and high speed camera Settling tank:3m3 and 25bar pressure

Other Information

It is the only facility in the country which allows for an impact of an 8 Pound Bird at over 200m/s on aircraft components like the empennage which is one of the requirements for a civilian transport aircraft (FAR 25.631). Also caters to a 4-pound bird hit on windshields and airframe which is also one of the needs for a transport aircraft (FAR 25.775 and FAR 25.571). The facility for analysis of bird hit through commercial packages like RADIOSS and PAMCRASH also exists along with testing.
