INSAT class of satellites make use of sunshield mirrors for cooling the IR detector of very high resolution radiometer (VHRR). These mirrors are made of aluminum alloys, a light weight and high strength material. These aluminum alloy surfaces are coated with a three-layer coating and polished to have specular reflectance >98% and a surface roughness of < 5 nm. At CSIR-NAL, this technology has been successfully mastered. These mirrors were integrated and successfully launched in INSAT 2A, 2B, 2E, INSAT 3A, METSAT (Kalpana I), EUTELSAT and INSAT 3D. This development has resulted in huge foreign exchange savings and also self-reliance in strategic areas.
