HIGH EFFICIENCY SOLAR SELECTIVE COATING FOR FLAT PLATE COLLECTORS (NALSUN)

In the late 1980s a solar selective and cost effective black chromium coating for water heating and other applications was successfully developed by SED and has been patented widely in several countries. The NALSUN coating is one of the most commercially successful technologies of CSIR-NAL and has been transferred to 29 industries all over India. One of the largest solar hot water plants at M/s Godavari Fertilizers, Kakinada, which uses NALSUN coating technology, has a capacity of producing 1.2 lakh litres of hot water at 60 °C per day. The NALSUN coating is still being widely used as a flat plate collector for water heating applications in domestic, hospital and hospitality industries. The improved version of NALSUN coating has also been designed for industrial process heat and steam generation (NALSUN III and IV) and is used for water desalination for drinking water production and industrial water heating applications.
