Subir Kumar Bhaumik is a Chief Scientist in the Materials Science Division & Adviser (Management & Administration) at CSIR-National Aerospace Laboratories (CSIR-NAL), Bangalore. He graduated with a B.E. degree in Metallurgical Engineering from Calcutta University in the year 1984. Subsequently, he obtained his M.Tech degree and PhD from Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur in the year 1986 and 1992 respectively. At CSIR-NAL, he has briefly worked in the area of high pressure – high temperature synthesis of ceramic materials such as cubic and wurtzite boron nitride for cutting tool applications (1992-1998). Followed by this, he has been working in the area of failure analysis and accident investigation for the past 20 years (1998-2017). He has investigated more than 1150 cases of engineering failures of which, 90% of the investigations are related to aircraft incident and accidents. He has been instrumental in initiating R&D activities for the processing and characterization of Nickel-Titanium (NiTi) shape memory alloys (SMAs) at CSIR-NAL and he has more than 15 years of research experience in this field.
