A Brief on the 18th AeSI CFD Symposium held on 10-11 August 2016 in CSIR-NAL.

Every year people from academia, research institutes and industries working in the field of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) converge for the annual CFD Symposium held under the aegis of Aeronautical Society of India. This year, the 18th CFD symposium was held on 10th and 11th August 2016 at S R Valluri Auditorium in CSIR-NAL, Bengaluru. 

Dr.  V K Saraswat, Member NITI Aayog, and President, The Aeronautical Society of India, was the Chief Guest for the inaugural function.  In his address Dr Saraswat spoke of the growth of CFD in the past two decades. He specifically dealt upon the various developments in CFD in the national scene and gave several examples of how CFD has been used in the national aerospace programs. In particular, he mentioned about the pioneering efforts of Prof. S M Deshpande in the growth of CFD in India. He also stressed that R&D efforts in CFD must continue, along with applications in ongoing development programmes.

The Guest of Honor, Shri T Suvarna Raju, CMD HAL, in his address, described the use of CFD as a design and analysis tool for various aircraft programmes of HAL. Prof. S M Deshpande, Special Invitee, talked about the formation of the AeSI CFD Division and current trends and future directions in CFD.

Dr. Girish Sahni, Director General CSIR presided over the function. In his remarks, Dr. Sahni encouraged CSIR-NAL to go ahead and take its civil aircraft design and development programmes to their logical conclusion.

A special Invited Session was held on the Indigenous CFD development in weapons integration programme. Three invited speakers, Dr. K Anandhanarayanan from DRDL Hyderabad, Dr. D Narayan from ADA Bengaluru and Mr. C K Niranjanan from CSIR-NAL, were invited to present the current work being carried out for various strategic programmes of the country. In addition to this special session, there was an Invited Presentation on aerodynamic optimization by Dr. N Anil of BITS Hyderabad Campus and a Valedictory Lecture on the use of CFD for fighter aircraft design by Dr. A K Ghosh, Project Director AMCA, ADA.

The conference committee received about ninety papers. After the reviewing process a total of sixty papers were selected for presentations. The symposium was conducted in two parallel sessions.  The complete logistics of the symposium was taken up by CSIR-NAL staff and was excellently conducted.
