Team Operations at the DZ:

Five teams per day will travel to the South end of the DZ by mini-bus.  Teams will arrive at the launch point at 0640 where they will set up and store their equipment as desired in separate tentage provided for each team.  Each tent has four power outlets for use in powering up systems for pre-flight checks.  The first two teams of the day will set up in adjacent tents at the GCS point.   The first two teams have approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes from arrival till first launch. Both teams should be ready to launch at 0820 as the 2nd team must be prepared to launch in the event that the first team experiences a critical failure of their system during the pre-launch checks.  The third team will move into the vacated GCS position at the completion of the first demonstration.

All teams will remain at the launch point until completion of their demonstration.  After completion of each demonstration and equipment pack-up, teams will be transported to the viewing gallery to watch subsequent team demonstrations.

Teams must keep their order unless maintenance or system malfunction prevents them from demonstrating.  Teams that begin a demonstration but do not complete the demonstration may be offered a BU slot on the last day of the event at the discretion of the judges.  Teams that are unable to begin the demonstration due to a maintenance issue of system malfunction prior to first launch will be moved to last in the order for the day.  If the fifth team does not fly due to schedule slippage during the first four team’s demonstrations, the team will move to the back-up slot on the last day

Attendee Observation at the DZ:

Attendees will travel to the North entrance to the DZ by mini-bus and will walk to the viewing gallery on the Northwest corner (~100m).  The seating in the viewing gallery will afford good views of the hostage building and the last 200-300 meters across which the commando teams and EOD robots will move enroute to rescuing the hostages.  Closed circuit monitors will show the MAVs in different phases of operation across the one kilometer length of the DZ.  Attendees will be restricted to the viewing gallery, the rest area, aid station and Internet kiosk during each of the 40 minute demonstration periods. No attendees should cross the No-Fly boundary at any time.  The launch point is off-limits to attendees.  Dr. Michelson will introduce each team’s entry and provide running commentary on the demonstration from a position in the viewing gallery and will be available to answer questions about how teams are proposing to solve the challenge.
