Commandos

Overview:

The commandos are a team of two individuals provided by the organizers that move on foot to rescue the hostages from the bank building based on guidance from the team at the ground control station.

Details:

The following information and guidance applies to the commando team:

Equipment:  Commando teams are equipped with a two-way radio, a 4m COE GPS, a map of the demonstration zone and a distinctive uniform that differentiates them from the red team, judges and Sim UGV operators.

Abilities: Commandos have the ability to:
- Monitor the red team once they have line of sight (LOS) with the lower level of the bank building.
- Move at an average speed between 1.7 m/sec and of 3.3 m/sec between the IP and the last covered position.
- Sprint at 5m/sec from the last covered position to the door used to rescue the hostages.
- Deviate off the pre-defined routes to avoid an identified mine if directed specifically by the ground control station.

Actions:

Commandos will:

- Acknowledge receipt of instructions, report completion of movement and location, report LOS with the red team, and report rescue of the hostages using their two way radio.
- Request retransmission of instructions if they do not understand the task.
- Request alternate instructions if unable to understand after two attempts.
- Discuss the mission with the team once the mission begins until departure from the IP.
- Depart from the ingress point (IP) along pre-defined routes directly between covered positions that are known prior to departure.
- Report arrival at each covered position and wait for instructions from the ground station prior to movement to the next covered position.
- Check to confirm that they do not have line of sight with the red team prior to beginning movement from a covered position.
- Attempt to avoid detection by assuming a prone position, reporting line of sight with the red team and current location if they detect that they have LOS of the red team during movement between covered positions.
- Consider assuming a prone position as the equivalent of arriving at a covered position.
- Stop movement, assume a prone position and provide location if a team contacts them via radio during movement between positions.
- Wait for instructions to conduct the rescue through a specific door on the lower level once the commandos arrive at the last covered position closest to the bank building.
- Conduct the rescue attempt from the last covered position independently (using logical best effort) to reach the directed door while monitoring the red team movement and field of view. (Team option)
- Conduct the rescue attempt from the last covered position based on real time voice guidance from the ground station to reach the selected door. (Team option)

Commandos will not:

- Separate from each other except in the case of an emergency situation where a single commando will carry on with the mission.
- Report observations to the ground control team except for having line of sight with the red team.
- Travel off the predefined routes except for deviating around the zone of an identified mine when directed by the ground control station.
- Search for mines
- Observe the hostage visual or audio signatures.

Notes:

- The commando’s ability to detect when they have LOS with the red team and vice-versa are variables that are difficult to control but are accepted as part of the operational environment.  The commandos and the red team are trained to monitor LOS visually and react appropriately.  It is assumed that the commando’s ability to monitor LOS will improve as the distance to the bank building decreases.  These variables can be best controlled by the ground station directing the commandos to move only when the red team’s field of view is blocked by an obstacle.
- The commandos have been trained to understand door locations using the ordinal direction that the side of the building faces and in the case of multiple doors on a single side, using left door, right door and center door to describe the door position.  No side of the bank building has more than three doors.
- Once the commandos touch a door to the bank building the rescue mission portion of the challenge is complete.
